The Plague

This is the outbreak of desert locusts that is threatening the food supply across Africa. It began in 2019 and is the worst outbreak in 70 years.

Cyclone Mekunu in 2018 produced heavy rains, which lead to a rapid increase of locusts. 20.2 million people face severe acute food insecurity in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Uganda, and Tanzania.

The unpredictable weather patterns East Africa is seeing mean that locusts are becoming increasingly expensive and harder to control.
